The Warrandyte Riverside Market, the largest community market in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, was held last Saturday on the banks of the Yarra River at Stiggants Reserve, drawing thousands of visitors.
“The Warrandyte Riverside Market was first established in 1985,” market manager Rob Edwards said. “Each month we welcome around 5,500 visitors to Stiggants Reserve.”
The market is managed by a committee of local groups including the Rotary Club of Warrandyte Donvale, the Lions Club of Warrandyte and the Warrandyte Community Association. Profits are returned to the community through grants and sponsorships, making the event a long-standing part of Warrandyte’s local identity.
Nearly 180 stalls lined the riverside reserve, offering fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade jewellery, flowers, plants, baked goods and homewares. Food vendors selling coffee, artisanal bread and popular hot dishes drew long queues, with families gathering at shaded areas to eat while listening to live music.
“We are licensed to operate 184 stalls and they are almost always sold out,” Edwards said. “There is a waiting list of hundreds of stallholders hoping for a place.”
Among the attractions was a well-known scone stall that has become a highlight for many visitors. Ms. Li, a Warrandyte resident originally from China, attended with her young child. “I come to the market every time,” she said. “We always buy scones from this stall. It is our must-visit. There is always a queue, but it is worth it.”
Alongside food and craft stalls, community and environmental groups also took part. Friends of Warrandyte State Park, a volunteer-run organisation, promoted conservation of native plants and animals and encouraged residents to support habitat restoration. Their stall featured brochures, displays of local flora and fauna, and information about volunteering opportunities.
Edwards said the market’s role extended well beyond trade. “The market has the unique ability to bring the whole community together, working collaboratively and consolidating friendships. All the gains go directly back into the community.”
The Warrandyte Riverside Market is held on the first Saturday of every month, except in January, with a special Christmas market in December. It has become a key date in the Warrandyte calendar for residents and visitors alike.
The September market ran from 8am to 1pm at Stiggants Reserve, where families browsed under the riverside gums and enjoyed live music along with their shopping. More information can be found at warrandyteriversidemarket.com.au.
