Manningham Crime Investigation Unit is currently investigating several cases where local residents have been targeted by a scam known as the 'Bank Courier Scam'.
In this scam, offenders call victims pretending to be from a bank or a government agency. They claim there’s been a security breach - often saying something like “Your account has been compromised” - and arrange for a courier to collect your bank cards so they can supposedly "investigate."
These scammers often have limited personal details, such as your name or the last few digits of your bank card, which they use to gain your trust. Once you begin to engage, they pressure you into revealing more sensitive information, including PINs, passwords, and one-time security codes.
Seniors who live alone are often the primary targets. In some cases, the scammers keep the victim on the phone for hours - or even over several days - gradually convincing them to transfer more funds into accounts the criminals can access.
Protect Yourself – Know the Signs:
- Your bank will NEVER send someone to collect your cards.
- Your bank will NEVER ask for your PIN, online banking password, or security codes.
- Your bank will NEVER tell you to move money to another account “for safekeeping” or “to catch a hacker.”
- Setting daily limits on your cards can help reduce the risk of large financial losses.
