The “Blessing Scam” or “Evil Spirits Scam” is an international fraud scheme that primarily targets elderly women of Chinese background. It is typically carried out by three female scammers, often wearing hats or face masks to conceal their identities. The scam begins in a public setting, such as a shopping centre.

One of the offenders approaches the victim and strikes up a casual conversation. The victim is then told that an evil spirit is following them, and that a tragedy will occur to them or a loved one unless a blessing ritual is performed. The victim is persuaded to collect valuables - usually cash and jewellery - and place them in a bag for the ceremony.

During the so-called ritual, the scammers secretly swap the victim’s bag with an identical one containing worthless items. The victim is then instructed not to open the bag for several days to ensure the “blessing” works, delaying the discovery of the theft.

Important Safety Reminder:
If someone approaches you offering to bless your belongings or warns of bad luck or spirits, walk away immediately and contact the police.
Do not share personal information or hand over valuables to anyone trying to scare or pressure you.
