Tucked away in the back streets off High Street in Doncaster, Greythorn Bowls Club feels like a suburban oasis — an expansive stretch of green hidden just behind the noise and chaos of the South Eastern Freeway’s Doncaster Road exit. Step inside, and you’d never know it.
Since 1959, the club has been home to a loyal community of bowlers. With two all‑weather synthetic greens, it offers year‑round, day‑and‑night play. But in recent years, long‑time member James Helm — who has been with the club for more than 20 years and has served as secretary for the last five years — has helped guide an evolution focused on connection, activity and live music.
When Manningham Council introduced the Live and Local initiative, James and the club were quick to get involved.
“The Club has facilities that lend themselves to live performances, and we see live music as an important way of bringing the community together,” he said.
“We’ve been running open mic nights for over a year, every Thursday from 7pm,” he said. “There’s no fee involved — it’s really up to the musicians when they want to come. It’s a relaxed, low-pressure environment and everyone is welcome.
”Through the Manningham program, James also connected with a local musician who now performs every Friday evening after the club’s social BBQ — another event that welcomes all.
“The response from members has been great,” he said. “Over the next 12 months, we’re hoping to broaden the range of genres we host, including different cultural music styles.
”Blues, rock and jazz already have strong followings among regulars, and music nights are beginning to draw new faces to the club.
“We’ve seen new visitors come to listen to specific bands or solo acts,” he said. “Whether that translates into new members, we’ll get a better sense of that over time.”
For performers, the opportunity is highly valued.
“The musicians who come along are always appreciative. That kind of feedback tells us we’re on the right track.”
Often, it’s the small moments that matter most.
“It’s great to see some of our members up and dancing to the music,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about.”
Greythorn Bowls Club is part of a broader trend across Melbourne, with bowls clubs redefining their role as community hubs.
“I think bowls clubs are really well placed to support live music,” James said.
“With just a few upgrades, many clubs across Manningham could become great venues for local performers.”
The club plans to continue growing its music program, with weekly open mic nights and Friday evening performances now a permanent fixture.
For those who haven’t visited before, the invitation is open.“It’s a warm and welcoming place,” James said.
“You can enjoy bowls, music and the company of a great group of locals. With all‑weather greens, ample parking, and a great atmosphere, it’s well worth a visit.”
Upcoming events include a free performance by local six‑piece band Sly Greyhounds on March 29 from 2pm.
Whether it’s the quiet concentration of a game on the green or the lively energy of music in the clubhouse, Greythorn Bowls Club is showing there’s more than one way to bring a community together.
