Spring is here — and so is the Aussie Bird Count, Australia’s biggest citizen science event! From Monday 20 to Sunday 26 October 2025, everyone is invited to spend just 20 minutes spotting, identifying, and counting the birds around them — in backyards, parks, balconies, or wherever you find yourself.

Last year, more than 57,000 people counted over 4.1 million birds, with Rainbow Lorikeets, Noisy Miners, and Australian Magpies topping the charts. Will they stay on top this year?

Taking part is easy:

  1. Pick your spot
  2. Watch for 20 minutes
  3. Submit your sightings via the free Aussie Bird Count app

Every count contributes valuable data to BirdLife Australia, helping track changes in bird populations and guide conservation efforts.

“Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just enjoy hearing a kookaburra’s laugh, we want everyone to take part,” says Kate Millar, CEO of BirdLife Australia, organiser of the event.

Register now at www.aussiebirdcount.org.au and make bird counting your new spring tradition.
